Unaccepted Records

One immature (81-37) at Rutherford Beach, Cameron Parish, 22 March 1981. This record unfortunately was decided on a technicality. The supporting photograph was accidentally lost during the review process. Many Committee members felt that the identification was correct, based on an initial examination of the original slide, but the accompanying written description was too weak to stand alone, and so was not accepted once the slide was lost. The Committee has learned its lesson from this accident, and no longer circulates unique copies of documentation. Contributors should draw their own lesson: while a photograph always helps support a record, it should always be accompanied by a good written description. Such descriptions serve to emphasize important features shown in the photograph, and to supply supplemental information not conveyed by the photograph.

One immature (1985-40; formerly 86-9) two miles west of Holly Beach, Cameron Parish, from 25 to 28 April 1985. This bird was "mostly" Glaucous in its features, but the wing-tips were noticeably darker that the rest of the wing, suggesting some degree of hybridization with some other species of gull.

One first or second year bird (89-93) on 2 Jan. 1989, Calcasieu: Lake Charles. Although the bird may have been correctly identified, the description and the observer did not convincingly eliminate the possibility that the bird may have been a leucistic Herring Gull.

One first winter (2004-004) on 22 December 2004, Lafourche: Fourchon Beach, mi. E Fourchon Rd. After a second circulation most Members agreed that the description was relatively superficial and that the report did not discuss how a hybrid or a worn/bleached Herring Gull was excluded. Without photographic corroboration to bolster the written description, the record was considered unsatisfactory.

Two (2010-85) on 24 April 2010, Cameron: Cameron, Cameron jetties. The photographs show very distant individuals that appear to be Royal Terns.

One first winter (2010-111) on 22 September 2010, Cameron: Holly Beach, beach at E end of Egret St. Most members believed that the details were insufficient to confirm Glaucous Gull over other whitish gull species or a leucistic individual, or for that matter, even an extremely bleached summering Herring Gull. Much better documentation would be required, especially for a September occurrence.

One first-winter (2012-123) on 10 March 2012, Cameron: Holly Beach. The photograph clearly shows an individual different than Glaucous Gull LBRC 2012-125 (previously accepted at this locality). This record went to a Fourth Circulation Discussion Vote. Following discussion, three Members voted not to accept because they were concerned by its apparently small size, longish- and somewhat slender bill, and a large-eyed look that better suggested a hybrid rather than a runt Glaucous Gull. Accepting Members believed the smaller size was not a deal-breaker and that a small Glaucous Gull was possible (including small barrovianus subspecies of Western U.S.).

One immature (2012-126) on 24 March 2012, Cameron: East Jetty Beach, 1 mi. S Cameron. Possibly correctly identified, but photographs and the description did not adequately rule-out other species. Close examination of photographs indicated that this was not one of the two accepted individuals present in the vicinity around the same time.

One immature (2012-133) on 27 April 2012; Cameron: Cameron, East Jetty Park. Despite there being a Glaucous Gull reported in the vicinity around the time of this observation and that this could have potentially been the same individual, unfortunately the description and photographs were not adequate for elimination of a very bleached or leucistic Herring Gull or hybrid.

One immature (2012-135) on 9 May 2012; Cameron: beach 3.3 mi. E Holly Beach. Possibly correctly identified, but distance from the bird and the relatively superficial description did not provide enough support to eliminate other species.

One second-winter (2014-025) on 13 February 2014, Vermilion: just N of SW Pass in Vermilion Bay. The bird is suggestive of a Glaucous Gull, but photos only showed the birds underside as it passed overhead, and other features could not be ascertained well-enough to rule out a hybrid or leucistic individual of another species.

One adult (2018-008) on 6 January 2018, Acadia; (ph). This is a very interesting record of an adult white-winged gull only seen overhead and photographed. There were no other gulls nearby to yield a size comparison thus rendering characters and proportions subjective. There is only one prior Louisiana occurrence of an adult Glaucous Gull for Louisiana and none of nominate Iceland Gull. The observer and most of the experts queried during their initial review, as well as many of the LBRC Members during their reviews, thought that the gull was relatively small. A nominate Iceland would be unprecedented, but a small Glaucous (barrovianus) originating from Alaska/NW Canada may also be as unlikely. And, Members were concerned that the photos may not reflect the bird’s actual proportions. Following the Discussion Round vote, all but one Member voted not to accept.
