Other observers who independently identified the bird(s):

pretty good, looking east

Optical equipment:

10x42 Eagle Optics, good condition; probably looked thru somebody's Nikon scope, too.

Distance to bird(s):

Duration of observation:

Habitat:

shallow pond in intermediate (?) marsh

Behavior of bird:

swimming with a group of Blue-winged Teal. It seemed to be associating with a particular drake BWTE.

much browner overall than nearby BWTE; large, long and wide bill; the forehead/bill shape was almost Canvasback-like. This record will stand or fall on the photos. I will submit some, but D. Patton has some much better photos.

Voice:

na

Similar species:

Blue-winged Teal is a concern. Of greater concern is the possibility the bird was a hybrid. I didn't see anything in its plumage or structure to suggest hybrid, but it did appear to be paired with a drake BWTE

Photographs or tape recordings obtained?

my photos will be sent separately; Patton got some much better photos; Conover might have had camera malfunction.

Previous experience with this species:

A fair number out west; several males in LA. No experience with female hybrids

Identification aids:

Geo? Sibley?

after observation: standard guides as well as Waterfowl by Madge and Burn

This description is written from:

brief note, photos, memory

Are you positive of your identification? If not, explain:

I'm sure it is not a Blue-winged, but I guess there is the possibility that it is a hybrid.
