Behavior of bird:

At first only a single adult was observed foraging fairly low over the lawn on the east side of the bathhouse.  Noticeable upon initial glimpse was an in flight jizz and flight style inconsistent w/ the expected Tree Swallow.  Within minutes, a second adult joined the first bird in foraging in typical swallow-like fashion around the bathhouse.  Both swallows were last observed foraging over a broader area to the east of the bathhouse.

Description:

Compact, square-tailed swallow w/ rufous-orange rump, dark bluish back w/ distinct longitudinal white streaks, dark brown wings, and pale orange-buff collar separating dark bluish back and dark cap.  Cheeks, sides of neck, and throat were orange-buff and contrasted markedly w/ dark rusty forehead patch and whitish belly.  Sides were tinged grayish.  Undertail coverts with dusky/dark brown centers.  Presumed P. f. pelodoma based on size, relative paleness of orange cheeks/throat/upper breast, lack of throat/upper breast color bleeding onto sides, and date of occurrence.

Voice:

not heard.

Similar species:

Cliff Swallow (CLSW) eliminated by orange-buff cheeks, sides of neck, and throat in combination w/ dark rusty forehead patch.  Melanogaster CLSW w/ cheeks and throat similar to nominate, but w/ rusty or chestnut forehead.  Other swallow spp. easily eliminated by tail and wing shape, plumage coloration, and flight style.  Hybrid Cave x Barn ruled out by relatively short, squared tail and typical adult CASW plumage.
